The “Lytro” could revolutionize photography. It is indeed the first plenoptic camera, a process by which we focus only after the shot, intended for the general public.<\/p>\n
Also called light field photography, this technology captures a field of light, unlike a conventional camera capturing a single plane.<\/p>\n
It is based on a conventional photo sensor but topped with a multitude of microlenses. Each ray of light is thus captured by a batch of photodiodes, and not by only one, which makes it possible to deduce the direction, and thus the depth, that is to say a third dimension.<\/p>\n
There is therefore no need to focus before shooting, since the recording of the angle of attack of each of the rays makes it possible to calculate the point of convergence, and thus to simulate a shift of the sensor forward or backward, which is what a traditional focusing system does.<\/p>\n
As a direct consequence, the shutter release is clearly accelerated.<\/p>\n
Better still, it is also possible to simulate a lateral shift, in other words a parallax, that is to say to simulate several points of view… It does not take more to create a photo in relief (in 3D)! The processing software will not be able to do it at first, but it will be able to do it later, even with old pictures since all the required data are intrinsic to them<\/p>\n
