California-based Lit Motors hopes to have invented the vehicle of the future. Its C1 is a two-wheel drive electric scooter (the current prototype has only one) carrying one person and, if the sardine can concept doesn’t scare it, a second passenger.

The advantages of the vehicle, intended rather for local trips because its autonomy is limited to 321 km per charge, are numerous: ease of parking and maneuvering, non-polluting engine, possibility of getting through traffic jams and, above all, great safety, a major problem of driving on two wheels…

The manufacturer has equipped its C1 with innovative technologies to limit the dangers of riding on two wheels. The scooter is first protected by a body. It loses the advantage of the contact of the wind in the hair to the “Easy Rider”, but it gains in terms of comfort in case of bad weather and especially of protection in case of accidents.

In addition to the bodywork, it is equipped with seat belts and airbags. But the best part is the two huge gyroscopes, consisting of a permanently rotating wheel. Located under the driver, they straighten the vehicle no matter what position it is in, reminding us a bit of the Seegway in this sense. They allow the C1 to remain stable, even when stopped, at a red light for example, without having to put your foot on the ground. According to Lit, it would take the power of a young elephant running into the electric scooter to lay it down on the road and prevent the two gyroscopic systems from working properly.

If the concept is interesting, it remains to be seen if Lit Motors will go the distance. The C1 is scheduled for commercialization at the end of 2014, and there are still two years of development to be financed, technical tests to be validated, and approval from the U.S. authorities before the company can move from prototype to commercialized vehicle.

The electric motors in each wheel (20 kW x 2) are powered by a series of 8kWh Lithium-ion batteries. The maximum speed that could be reached would be around 160 km/h. Weight: 360 kg.
